When Harry Wayne Casey - KC for short - started The Sunshine Band, he probably didn't know that he would sell more than 100,000,000 records, win three Grammy Awards (and have nine other nominations) and take home an American Music Award.
But that's just what he did. And at 52, Mr. Casey reveals that it's all "just God-given energy."
"I think you find the energy in anything you do when you enjoy what you're doing," Mr. Casey said during a phone interview from Miami, Fla. "When you enjoy something, then the energy's just there."
An "avid record collector" in his youth, Mr. Casey found inspiration in music, listening to R&B and artists such as Ray Charles and Nat "King" Cole. When he discovered that some slower songs were included, he wanted to create a record that from "beginning to end was all up-tempo and feel-good music."
"At the time, I felt that was what the world was missing, was something to bring them up," Mr. Casey said. "So that was our ambition, to bring happiness to people."
He feels that is needed more today than ever, which may be why he's still on the road, letting the sunshine in with hits such as Get Down Tonight, That's The Way (I Like It) and Shake Your Booty. And there will be lots of boogieing Saturday night at the House of Blues as the band celebrates its 30th anniversary.
The show will include songs from the band's long history: "all the hits but some of the B-sides," too, Mr. Casey said. "The real fans would know what they are 'cause they're on previous albums."
Although he's toured nonstop since 1973, Mr. Casey said "it feels like the first day I went out."
"They're high energy," Mr. Casey said about his concerts. "The show that we're bringing to the House of Blues this year has been revamped and re-choreographed, 80 percent of it."
With seven new band members - a new drummer, four new horn players, a new guitarist and a new dancer - the show is "even more incredible than it was" with more "getting down," Mr. Casey said.
"There's definitely more energy in the new show than the ones we've had, which have been pretty high energy," Mr. Casey said. "We've just kicked it up a notch. As Emeril would say - Bam!"
KC and The Sunshine Band is also scheduled to perform on the "Get Up and Dance" tour beginning in August. Other acts on the itinerary include The Pointer Sisters, The Village People, Thelma Houston and Martha Wash of the Weathergirls.
In 2001, KC released I'll Be There For You, an album of new material. "There's talks with the record company right now" about future releases, Mr. Casey said.
"I'm enjoying what I'm doing and I'm very complacent in my life right now. Sometimes the thought of having another hit record is a little frightening because of what comes with it." But, "it would be great to have another hit record before I finally retire or whatever -- one last one. I always think it's up to God for things to happen. So if it's in the cards for it to happen again then it will happen, and if it's not, then it's not."
And that's the way (uh huh, uh huh) he likes it.
